Stuart Rea attended Solihull School where he studied music under David Turnbull. He was Head Chorister at St Alphege, Solihull under Peter Gregory and sang with Ex Cathedra in Birmingham under Jeffrey Skidmore. He gained a choral scholarship to Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge in 1987.

After a spell singing semi-professionally – including at De Vlaamse Opera in Antwerp – he went into the City, where he remained until 2016 working in infrastructure and project finance. On leaving investment banking he took up composition, writing a set of responses, an evening service and numerous motets and psalm chants.
