Premiere performance of Martin Hindmarsh’s Missa Brevis
The Choir of St John’s Wood Church, conducted by Director of Music Michael Cayton, will give the world premiere performance of Martin Hindmarsh’s Missa Brevis as part of LFCCM 2021 on Sunday 16 May 2021. The mass is scored for four-part choir and organ and is published by Scaramella Press. The composer writes:
“Throughout my long career in music, composing has been a small but, for me, important part. I have composed choral works for the numerous choirs and choral societies that I have directed and songs for myself and my wife to sing. Since retiring after 30 years lecturing in music at Sheffield University, I have had the opportunity to get know both the wonderful prose of Cranmer’s prayer book and the delights of psalm and chant singing. These have motivated me to compose settings of morning and evening canticles, which are sung by my colleagues, the Gentlemen of Her Majesty’s Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace, and two settings of the Preces and Responses, which are sung by the Godfrey Searle Choir in Reigate.
“The Missa Brevis, although in Latin, was written with the sound of a Church of England choir in mind. I am very grateful to Michael Cayton and the choir of St John’s Wood Church for making this first performance part of the LFCCM.”

Martin Hindmarsh’s Missa Brevis is published by Scaramella Press, which was initially founded to provide clear and reliable editions of early music but has since branched out into bespoke typesetting for composers, choirs, and schools, with a focus on contemporary music. Matthew Pochin, the founder of Scaramella Press, has been working with Martin since mid-2018 to bring his music to publication and looks forward to continuing to explore Martin’s rich and diverse music. It is Scaramella Press’s aim to work closely with composers like Martin to realise their intentions and make using the published music as clear and easy as possible.
